EVERY movement backstage brings a round of cheers, and as Duran Duran, not a band to tease its audience, hits the stage, the noise goes even higher.
Simon Le Bon bounces around, trim and fit, sporting a moustache and beard, while Nick Rhodes looks as though he has just stepped out of the band's heyday in the early '80s.
And when they launched into Before the Rain off the new album, it seemed the noise rose again at Rod Laver Arena last night.
The glamour boys of pop dip into the back catalogue for Planet Earth and A View to a Kill before returning to the new album for Blame it on the Machines.
Le Bon, Rhodes, Roger Taylor and John Taylor are back in Australia for the first time in four years, promoting their latest album, the Mark Ronson-produced All You Need is Now -- their 13th studio album.
By the time young Melbourne fan Chris counts the band into The Reflex, the Baby Boomers have been transported to the days when big hair and shoulder pads ruled, and the teenagers in the audience are happy to dance along with them. The almost-capacity crowd sings, dances, and, for a few stolen hours, slips back in time to recapture an almost forgotten youth.
Duran Duran were supported by the Sydney electro-pop trio Radio INK of DJs Dic Money and Ronny Clark and singer Miss S.
