JOHN RICHMOND: Boys on Film for Spring 2010

By Marcellous L. Jones

Milan , Italy – The British designer John Richmond decided to take us back on a trip in time for the inspiration on his new collection. And it is to the re-mixed sounds of the Duran Duran mega pop band of the 1980s that the show was designed around.

“NOTORIOUS” saw of the collection feature slim jean in relaxed cotton denim, white suits with the sleeves rolled up the elbow and trousers of baggy proportions around the crouch. We find them along the plaids, the jeans and the fitted shirts.

“THE REFLEX” set the way for the military inspired pieces. Though the cuts are more imposing, there is a hip tone very present. The garments shown in the section are on a backdrop of modern camouflage, grey silks with green hues to them and some wicked trousers.

“THE WILD BOYS” called out the punk feel of the 1980s. We find shades of fuchsia fading into pinks in some of the knitwear. There is a return to blacks embellished with silvery metallic zippers which decorate the shoulders, the front the wrists and bits of the sleeves. Hot pink suits, vests, printed T-shirts, studded sleeveless jackets and crystal encrusted T-shirts fill out the rest of this section.

“‘BOYS’ ON FILM” saw the collection take on a dramatically darker tone. In it we find black jeans mixed in with studs, crystal embroideries, and motifs superimposed on blazers. The novelty of this collection is that it has bright green silken camouflage prints added in a tux jacket and worn with jeans for a truly hip look. The trousers are greatly pleated, but the jeans are truly close to the body.
