Hurst Street mystery

Ask Katy

Hi Katy, First of all, I would like to thank all of the guys for a most fantastic concert at the Birmingham NEC Arena, way back in April 2004. It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion and one of the most memorable.

I was quite impressed by a couple of Duranies from Italy who were visiting Birmingham for the first time ever. They were very keen to see the places where Duran Duran have originated from. I was able to tell them about the Rum Runner as I used to work next door at the car dealer in 1979. But they were also asking about 76 Hurst Street, Birmingham. Apparently, there is a connection between this address and Duran Duran. I know that Toyah had a clothes shop near there around 1980. The whole area was totally different in those days. It would be really interesting to know the exact story. Many thanks.

NICK: John will remember better than I, but it could be the address of Khan and Belle, the store where much of the early clothing was acquired.

JT: I am not sure. That address could have been Rockers, which was a record store that also became our first "fan club" where we received mail.

ANDY: Well, I am not even FROM Birmingham like those two but I think it was this trendy wine bar place called HOSTERIA. I don't think either of them are right!
