Duran Duran FUTURE PAST

After 40 years, you could forgive even a band as inventive as Duran Duran for resting on their laurels. The title of their 15th album gives you a clue to how they have reinvigorated their sound – by collaborating with current pop visionaries and past pop legends.

Erol Alkan and Giorgio Moroder bring dance polish and sparkle to this ambitious record, while vocal contributions come from Swedish pop star Tove Lo and self-proclaimed “Queen of Drill” Ivorian Doll, while Japanese rock grrls Chai feature on the fantastically fun and effusively named “MORRE JOY!”

Despite the long list of guests and features (including Mark Ronson and Graham Coxon), the band manages to retain a sense of self. Crackling synth and pummelling beats drive the album at breakneck speed, while Simon Le Bon’s melodies run through like a lightning flash.

Though this upbeat record doesn’t necessarily sound like “the future” or “the past”, it’s an excellent balance of both.
