All press / news

Each month we feature a written Q&A on the Duran Duran Fan Community website and then the following month we put an excerpt on To follow are some highlights from our chat with John's bass guitar tech, Bernie Guerra!

So for people who don’t know what it is you do, describe your job.

I'm a guitar/bass technician. I maintain all guitars and gear throughout the tour; I make sure that everything is working properly and I'm there for any issues that may arise during a show. I make sure that whomever I'm working for goes onstage with no worries about anything technical so that he can deliver a great show.

How did you get connected with Duran Duran?

DD was coming to Dallas to do a show for Super Bowl XLV, and I'm not quite sure of the circumstances, but they needed a local bass tech to fill in. I showed, up did the gig, and about 3 weeks later was contacted by their production manager to inquire if I was available for a few more shows. Once we had agreed on everything I received a call asking if I was available for the entire tour. That's the short version of how I got here.

What’s a typical day for you when you’re on tour?

Well, backline loads in about noon. I usually find a spot for my bass world first, and set my basses out to acclimate to the room or weather (if it’s an outdoor show). Then I set up the rig and go through the rack for any cable that may have wiggled out in transit. I set everything up, go through the effects, and wait for line check. After that, I just make any adjustments to the rig or basses as needed, and wait for the show. After the show I pack it all up, roll everything to the truck, and do it all over again the next day!

So far, what has been your favourite DD gig, and why?

That's a hard question. We've done a lot of great shows , but I guess the Olympic concert in Hyde Park will always be a favorite, just because it was a really, really cool show.

What do your friends and family think about your work with Duran Duran?

They think it's cool that this small-town kid gets to work for these music icons. To me, it's my job, but I think it's pretty cool too.
