Duran Duran Unstaged, David Lynch, Mayan Theater

Last autumn a lucky few (including BlackBook) were gathered for an exclusive screening of the new David Lynch directed concert film Duran Duran: Unstaged. Now their adoring public will get the same privilege, as the film takes over 300+ US theatres for one night only this September 10.

Duran Duran Unstaged, David Lynch, Mayan Theater

Having run with their seminal Bowie influence, Duran Duran, of course, have been a veritable reinvention machine since. They’d gone at the speed of light, as history has it, from swashbuckling, rococo New Romantic radicals to worldwide pop megastars; but in recent years have become keen cultivators of the cultural zeitgeist, collaborating with everyone from Timbaland to Mark Ronson.

So, while aesthetically a collaboration with David Lynch may seem a bit of a curiosity, in another way it might have been almost inevitable—as both have built their legends on wildly altering our visual perceptions.

“With this production”, Simon Le Bon enlightens, “David Lynch has slapped, kicked and tickled the live band performance genre out of the 1970′s, where it had languished for decades, and well into the 21st Century. This is a whole different ballgown.”

Duran Duran Unstaged Beth Ditto David Lynch

The film itself was shot at a DD concert at LA’s historic Mayan Theater in 2011, and features a parade of superstar guests, from Ronson to Kelis to Beth Ditto to Gerard Way. Lynch creates a surreal overlay that is both exhilarating and sometimes mind-boggling; it is, indeed, like no concert film before it.

John Taylor tells us that the director “got complete creative control.”

Why are we not surprised?
