Duran Duran. Say the name in a group and you will get varied opinions depending on the age spread. Some might have been ‘Duranies’ during the day and have nothing but fond memories. Others might wonder who the heck Duran Duran is. And others still might quickly go to YouTube and look up their videos and go “ohhhh, them”.

Me? I was a closet Duranie. I liked the band but would never admit it since in my day it was only teenage girls who were fans. But behind the scenes, yeah I liked their music. So when John Taylor, the bassist for the band released his book In the Pleasure Groove: Love, Death, Duran Duran I was quite happy to give it read.

And what did I think?

I liked it. The book is pretty much identical to all other rock-ographices out there. And it goes something like this…Boy feels lonely and isolated. Boy finds music. Boy learns to play a musical instrument. Boy tells himself that he has what it takes to form a number one band. Boy forms band. Boy gets the success he always wanted. Boy does drugs. Band breaks up. Boy goes to rehab, finds religion, love. Boy gets married. Band reforms. The end.

So having said all this, why did I like the book then? Simply put it was an easy read. The chapters were short & sweet and each chapter contained a photograph of John through the years. Pretty much a recipe for success in the rock-ography world.

In to Duran Duran? Always wanted to know what the went on? Give In the Pleasure Groove: Love, Death, and Duran Duran a read. And even if you’re not a Duranie, give it a read. It’ll be an easy book to digest this Christmas season.
