Saturdays night for war hero

Published: 07th September 2011
A BRAVE war hero rubbed shoulders with the stars at last night's GQ Awards.

Major Peter Norton GC – who lost an arm and a leg in Iraq in 2005 – had a night to remember, hanging out with celebrities including Keith Richards, Simon Le Bon and The Saturdays.

He shared a joke with the wrinkly Rolling Stone and flashed a toothy grin while flanked by pop babes Frankie Sandford and Mollie King. Duran Duran frontman Simon also stopped by to congratulate the service man.

Peter was at the glitzy Royal Opera House bash to accept the Sun-backed Help For Heroes prize, which was this year presented to the armed forces.

The former Captain – now a serving officer in the Royal Logistic Corps – was awarded the George Cross in 2006 for his bravery and composure in the battlefield.

Despite being severely injured when an improvised explosive device detonated near him in Baghdad, in July 2005, he remained calm and lucid enough to deliver clear instructions to his team to prevent further injury or loss of life.

He spent the following year in hospital and a further year in a rehabilitation centre.
