Mascalzone Latino wins Farr 40 title at Key West
Italian businessman Vincenzo Onorato skippered Mascalzone Latino to the Farr 40 overall title at the Acura Key West regatta on Friday. Onorato and his crew were tied with defending Farr 40 champion Barking Mad, owned by James Richardson, entering the final race.
Mascalzone finished first, while Richardson's boat finished fourth and settled for third place overall in the five-day regatta. Joe Fly, another Italian entry owned by Giovanni Maspero, was second.
"We are extremely happy," Onorato said. "My only regret is I will not be able to get drunk with my crew tonight."
Onorato was returning to Naples, Italy, for a family commitment.
Nanoq, with Danish Crown Prince Frederik at the helm, finished in ninth place.
Frederick wasn't the only celebrity at the regatta. Simon LeBon, lead singer of the rock band Duran Duran, crewed aboard Rio, an IRC I boat owned by close British friend Charles Dunstone and named after the band's hit from the 1980s. Rio finished third in IRC 1.
Jeff Ecklund of the United States finished fourth and second on Friday to successfully defend his Melges 32 title after mediocre 11th- and 12th-place finishes on Thursday.
