Duran Duran is proud to participate in the Viennese Opera Online Auction, which starts today and ends on February 9th. A portion of the Ball's proceeds will be used to help the Special Olympics family rebuild their programs in areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics has focused on sports training and athletic competition for people with intellectual disabilities. Over the past 37 years, Mrs. Shriver has shown that when people with and without intellectual disabilities are brought together by Special Olympics, myths are dispelled, attitudes are changed, and new opportunities to embrace and celebrate people with intellectual disabilities are created.
In 1993, the first Special Olympics Winter Games held outside of North America took place in Salzburg and Schladming, Austria, a milestone that established a special link between the United States and Austria. In the spirit of this special relationship, the 2006 Viennese Opera Ball's Honorary Chairwoman is Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Mrs. Shriver, who was honored by the Austrian government at the 2005 Ball, will lead the support from the Special Olympics community.
Duran Duran have donated a signed copy of the "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise" 12" single to this great cause. Click below to bid.
