Duran Duran postpone January 2005 Japanese shows

Following last Thursday night’s UK Duran Duran concert, the band today announced, with much regret, that they have been instructed to postpone their upcoming Japanese tour to allow drummer Roger Taylor to recover from a foot injury that he sustained in December 2004.

Taylor had broken the fifth Metatarsal bone in his right ‘bass drum’ foot late last year, when he was in the United States and had been ordered to rest for several weeks. Following doctor’s orders, the drummer’s first show after the accident was on Thursday evening (January 13th) at London’s Hammersmith Palais (this was an intimate show that was being taped for broadcast on UK radio later this month). The following day, Taylor’s foot was severely swollen and painful and after a medical examination today, Roger was told that unless he rested the foot for an additional period of time he could risk serious long-term damage.

The band were slated to kick off their ‘Astronaut World Tour’ on January 22nd at the NK Hall in Tokyo. Two additional Tokyo Budokan arena dates, and three regional shows would have followed, ending on January 29th in Fukuoka. The tour would have marked the second time that the five original members of Duran Duran had played in Japan since reforming to make a new album (‘Astronaut’) earlier last year.

The specialist is confident that if Roger does not perform or undertake any prolonged physical exercise for the next few weeks, he will be able to resume playing in time for the 45 stop US tour, scheduled to start mid-February.

Speaking today from London, Roger said “We are all really upset about this and more than anything, hate to disappoint everyone that had bought tickets to see us play. I know that fans were traveling from all over the world to be at the opening of the tour in Japan – and I can only apologize that this injury has caused us to postpone the dates until the summer.’

Refunds for all tickets bought will be available with immediate affect from the place of purchase. Duran Duran hope to return to Japanese shores some time later this year and are working to reschedule as soon as possible. More details to be announced shortly.
