Duran Duran auction boosts charity fund

Superfans from across the world raised more than £10,000 for charity as they placed bids for their own piece of Duran Duran memorabilia at a Shropshire auction house.

One happy buyer from the auction is Steve Lowe, from Telford, proudly showing off a gold disc from the band's first album - he paid £750

Would-be buyers packed out the Nock Deighton salesroom, in Tasley, Bridgnorth, last night as items donated by the 1980s supergroup's guitarist Andy Taylor went under the hammer.

Organisers were delighted to more than double the £4,000 estimate which the sale of items was initially expected to raise for Beacon Centre for the Blind, in Sedgley.

One of the star lots, a BPI certified platinum disc for the group's album Duran Duran fetched a staggering £1,350 and was sold to a buyer in Carlisle.

Other discs in the auction were also popular with bidders and sold for prices varying from £475 to £1,050.

Superfan David Hall, from Kidderminster, won one of the coveted discs after placing a bid for £1,000. He also bought a jacket for £120.

Steve Lowe, from Telford, also left the salesroom with a gold disc from the group's first album, after bidding £750.

The cheapest disc, which raised £475, was taken home by an un-named buyer from the Wolverhampton area.

Clothing also proved particularly popular with New Yorker Lisa Mayers bidding £325 by telephone for a leather jacket with a skull design
